2008 scholarship recipient Alex Walker is using his EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Alex is majoring in honors aerospace engineering. He is also attending ERAU on a 4-year Navy ROTC scholarship and was recently promoted to a Midshipman 3rd Class. This past summer, Alex spent a month on active duty with the Navy shadowing senior enlisted personnel at Naval Base San Diego. He spent one week in each of the four Naval communities: Marines, Surface Warfare (ship), Submarine and Aviation. With the NROTC unit at Embry-Riddle, Alex is a member of the drill team and is also a drill detailer for the incoming 4th Class MIDNs. Late in his 4th Class year, Alex was honored to be asked to brief Vice Admiral Harris, commander of the 6th Fleet, prior to the unit’s annual Color Parade and awards ceremony. Also as part of his NROTC duties he has provided security during NASCAR Speed Weeks, including the Rolex 24 and the Daytona 500 races. Last March, Alex was privileged to offer mentoring and to volunteer as staff for the FIRST Robotics Tech Challenge competition held on the ERAU campus.
