Washington Students Chosen from 335 to Receive Additional Scholarship Awards
Richland, Washington – April 21, 2008 Two students from Washington will be able to worry a little less about paying for their college education. Siduo Jiang, a sophomore at Hanford High School, and Ellen Bengston, a sophomore at Richland High School, are Distinguished Award recipients of the EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship.
Exemplary students from eligible schools in six states were selected to receive $2,000 merit-based scholarships. All recipients were then entered into the competition for the three Distinguished Awards. Siduo and Ellen were selected from a pool of applicants from Idaho, South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee and other Washington students to receive the additional $5,000 and $2,500 Distinguished Award scholarships which are to be used in math, science, or engineering studies. A student in Tennessee has been selected to receive the $25,000 Distinguished Award.
The EnergySolutions Foundation began the scholarship program in 2006 as a way to promote the study of math, science, and engineering to encourage the next generation of professionals to seek degrees in biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, or physics.
Siduo wants to pursue a biochemistry degree from Harvard University and participates in the Science Bowl, Ecology Club, Math Team and is a winner of the Distinguished Freshman Award, Knowledge Bowl, Recycling Club, as well as a member of Mu Alpha Theta. Siduo has always been a straight A student in high school even while taking AP Biology, AP Physics, AP World History and Honors Pre-Calculus. And according to his AP Biology instructor and Science Department Chair, Dale Johns, Sudio’s “potential for academic growth is unlimited.”
Ellen wants to pursue a chemistry degree at Stanford University. She has been involved in math and science competitions since the 8th grade and has won several awards. She also was selected to be in the All-State Symphony Orchestra this school year and is a member of the swim team and tennis team. She is ranked #1 out of her class of 459 and is enrolled in an on line gifted youth program at Stanford University.
“Our goal with the EnergySolutions Foundation scholarship program is to help these motivated students fulfill their desire of a college education,” said Jordan Clements, Chairman of the Board for the EnergySolutions Foundation.
“Because the scholarship program is an extension of our commitment to this great community where EnergySolutions employees live and work, I am so happy for the difference this will make in Siduo’s and Ellen’s educations,” said Steve Creamer, CEO of EnergySolutions.
The EnergySolutions Foundation will honor all Washington scholarship recipients at a banquet on Thursday, May 1st at the Shilo Inn in Richland.
